Eja is a Dutch artist of much notoriety in Holland. She has worked with Studio Sem since 2000. Her work is sensual, sensitive and delicate. For years her own children were her models, from infancy to adulthood. Holding a sleeping newborn in the crook of her arm while modelling the head in clay with her free arm she manages to capture the unique expressiveness of a newborn. As the children grew, she captured budding adolesence with extraordinary sensitivity. Much of her work, if viewed beyond the literal figure is a vision of the abstract contained in the lines of the figure; the delicate point of balance in the zig-zag movement of a figure, or the expression of a shrug in the shoulders transforms a simple torso into a sensitive study about the intricacies of form, balance and expression.
