Etienne had worked with Sem many years ago and has worked with Studio Sem since 2008 making small elegant works in Black Belgian and statuary marble.
Etienne’s work, as he describes it, deals with every aspect of life; reflections of intense moments-human, spiritual and creative encounters. He has always been inspired by poetry; poetry that is the source of dreams that reside inside us all in some form. As he says himself, it is through the material, wood or stone, through the “mass” that he tries to communicate something of his profound will to communicate the poetic.
His first works were in marble, stone and wood, but bronze soon became his predominant material as it enables him to play with solids and hollows without regard to supporting a large mass as stone would require. Bronze also allowed him the freedom to explore the chromatic diversity of patina and play with colour gradations that have become a hallmark of his bronzes.
Since as early as 1972, his work has been shown in galleries as part of numerous group and solo exhibitions in United States, Belgium, Holland, China, Dubai and Singapore with his work now in collections at numerous venues all over the world.
On his website is a trailer for a very good film about Etienne, his philosophy and his work.
