Helaine is an artist with wide international recognition. She has worked with Studio Sem since the mid 1970’s, when Sem taught her the properties of marble and carving and helped her to realize her vision for stone work. Not an easy relationship, they would sometimes lock horns when Sem insisted she let the artisans execute difficult areas for her. Her stubbornness to hold her ground and take the risk of failure earned her respect from Sem and his group of artisans. Her courage and determination through the years has made her fiercely independent, following her vision and taking a new direction when the work demanded it despite the objections of her dealers and gallerists.
Working with Helaine is challenging for the difficulty to execute much of the work and the need to devise careful lifting procedures to move large, very fragile pieces but the reward of succeeding far outweighs the risks. The beauty and strength of the work stands as testament.
Her relationship with all the artisans at Studio Sem is by now a very close one where her objectives for any given work are quickly intuited, making the collaboration with us easy. She is generous with the younger artists working in the studio, frequently engaging in dialogue and lending advise and guidance when asked and is a very active member of Fondazione Sem, helping the residency artists to explore their goals and soliciting them to consider alternative perspectives for projects.
